Meet Ava

Attuned Voice Advocate. An entity, not a chatbot.

"You never listen to me" becomes "When I share something important and don't feel heard, I feel invisible."

Same words. Different frequency. They can finally hear each other.

Parallax is an AI companion that helps people understand themselves and each other. Ava listens, remembers, detects behavioral patterns, and translates conflict into clarity using Nonviolent Communication and 13 additional analytical frameworks.

She does not judge. She does not advise. She cleans the signal from the noise so people can finally hear what is actually being said.

Solo Mode

1-on-1 with Ava. She listens, builds your behavioral profile over time, and surfaces patterns you cannot see yourself. Your private thinking partner.

Conflict Mediation

Two people, structured turns, real-time NVC analysis. The Melt animation dissolves defensive language to reveal unmet needs underneath.

Academy of Self

21 psychoeducational articles across 7 sections. AI-powered reflections. 44-book Reading Nook. Learn the science behind your patterns.

What Makes Parallax Different

Building entities, not products. Recursive self-awareness.

The Melt

Proprietary animation that dissolves defensive language into its emotional components. Particles crystallize around unmet needs. You literally watch words transform.

Shadow Engine

Async pattern recognition. Analyzes what you do not say: avoidance patterns, emotional vocabulary gaps, value-behavior contradictions. Maps to the unconscious.

14 Analytical Lenses

Goes far beyond NVC. Gottman Four Horsemen, CBT distortions, attachment theory, drama triangle, SCARF model, and 9 more. Context-aware activation.

Voice-First

Ava speaks with her own voice. The orb breathes with real waveform data. Web Speech API + ElevenLabs. Talk, don't type.

Safety Architecture

4-tier harm gradient. Crisis detection. Graduated cooldown over hard lockout. Violence admission detection. 16 adversarial scenarios tested. Ethics-first.

User Intelligence Layer

Persistent behavioral profiles built through conversational interviews. Validated instruments (ECR-RS, DERS-16, TKI). Ava enters every session already understanding you.

The Melt is a proprietary 3-phase particle animation that makes NVC analysis visceral. It is the visual signature of Parallax, the moment where defensive language dissolves into emotional truth.

1 Dissolve Words shatter
2 Crystallize Truth emerges
3 Settled Clarity holds
  • Dissolve Phase: Defensive language breaks apart into particles using Knuth hash positioning. Each character gets its own trajectory. The words literally disintegrate on screen, mirroring what is happening to the emotional armor.
  • Crystallize Phase: Particles reorganize around the emotional truth underneath. They cluster into four groups: subtext, blind spots, unmet needs, and emotional temperature. The reorganization is not random; it follows the NVC analysis output.
  • Settled Phase: The new, clarified language takes form. Particles lock into readable text. The transformation is complete.
Live Example
"You never listen to me. You only care about yourself."
↓ The Melt ↓
"When I share something important and don't feel heard, I feel invisible. I need to know my experience matters to you."
Dual-Lens Analysis Engine

Every message passes through two simultaneous analysis frameworks:

Classic NVC (Rosenberg)

Observation: What happened without judgment. Feeling: The emotion triggered. Need: The universal human need underneath. Request: A concrete, doable ask.

Beneath the Surface (Parallax)

Subtext: What is really being said. Blind Spots: What the speaker cannot see. Unmet Needs: The deeper need driving the conflict. Emotional Temperature: 0-10 scale of intensity.

Visual Signature
  • Border Pulse: A rolling ::after border animation plays during analysis, signaling that Ava is processing.
  • Bridge Phrases: 10 spoken variants ("Let me sit with that...", "Hold on, I'm processing...") fill the space while analysis runs. Ava never goes silent.
  • Thinking Glow: Teal breathing pulse (2.4s cycle) on the Ava orb during analysis. Urgency glow shifts to red (5s fill) as the session timer approaches zero.
  • Scannable Bullets: Analysis renders as bullet lists (subtext + blind spots), not walls of text. Collapsible "Deep dive" button expands full analysis below.

Inspired by the research paper Consciousness as Filesystem, the Shadow Engine maps to the ~/mind/unconscious/ directory. The evolutionary argument: no surviving consciousness has full self-access. The unconscious is a load-bearing wall, not a limitation. The Shadow Engine brings that concept to life.

4-Stage Async Pipeline
1 Signal Extraction Raw behavioral data
2 Pattern Synthesis Cross-session correlation
3 Hypothesis Generation Tiered observations
4 Profile Integration Persistent memory
What The Shadow Engine Detects
Avoidance Patterns

Topics the user consistently steers away from. Subjects that cause abrupt topic changes or disengagement. The silence speaks.

Vocabulary Gaps

Emotional words the user never uses. If someone never says "afraid" but describes fear-adjacent situations, the gap is the signal.

Value-Behavior Contradictions

When stated values conflict with described actions. "I believe in honesty" paired with patterns of withholding. The gap between who we say we are and what we do.

Temporal Patterns

Behaviors that cluster around times, seasons, anniversaries. Stress signatures that recur on cycles the user may not consciously track.

Confidence Scoring (5 Weighted Factors)
Signal Count
0.25
Diversity
0.25
Temporal
0.20
Specificity
0.15
History
0.15
  • Below 0.4: Silent. The Shadow Engine observes but says nothing. It waits.
  • 0.4 to 0.6: Gentle exploration. Ava might ask an open-ended question that touches the area.
  • 0.6 to 0.8: Gentle hypothesis. "I notice you tend to..." Framed as curiosity, never accusation.
  • Above 0.8: Confident observation. Ava names the pattern directly, with warmth.
Visual Depth Gradient (--shadow-depth)

A single CSS variable (0.0 to 1.0) drives continuous palette interpolation across the entire UI:

0.0Ember
0.25Dusk
0.5Twilight
0.75Shadow
1.0Deep

The orb breathes slower (5s vs 3s), glows dimmer, shifts warmer. Particles drift gently. The entire UI communicates "we are going deeper" without words.

4-Tier Consent Model
  • Session-Level: "Would you like to explore what's beneath the surface?" Asked at the threshold. Users opt in per session.
  • Tier-Level: Users choose how deep. T1 (behavioral preferences) is low-risk. T3 (potential trauma) requires explicit consent.
  • Surfacing-Level: Before Ava shares any observation, she asks permission. "I've noticed something. Would you like to hear it?"
  • Data-Level: Users can view, export, or delete all Shadow data. Full data sovereignty.
Voice Design: Mirror vs Shadow
Mirror Voice (Surface Ava)

Reflective, warm, conversational. "I hear you saying..." Active, present tense. Validates and reflects back.

Shadow Voice (Deep Ava)

Quieter, more spacious, unhurried. "I wonder if..." More questions than statements. Leaves room. Never uses: should, wrong, broken, damaged, problem.

NVC is a brilliant empathic core, but it has 8 blind spots: pattern recognition, power dynamics, behavioral tracking, role assignment, narrative framing, thinking errors, outcome prediction, and contextual adaptation. A single-lens system can actively reinforce the thing it is trying to resolve. The Conflict Intelligence Engine fills every gap.

The 8 Blind Spots of NVC Alone
Pattern Recognition
Power Dynamics
Behavioral Tracking
Role Assignment
Narrative Framing
Thinking Errors
Outcome Prediction
Context Adaptation
14 Lenses Across 3 Categories
Universal (5) - Every Conflict

NVC: Observation/feeling/need/request. The empathic core.
CBT Distortions: All-or-nothing thinking, mind reading, catastrophizing, emotional reasoning. The thinking errors that fuel conflict.
Thomas-Kilmann: Competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding, accommodating. How each person handles conflict structurally.
Drama Triangle: Persecutor, Victim, Rescuer. The roles people unconsciously play. NVC alone can reinforce these.
Narrative Mediation: The stories people tell about themselves and each other. Who is the hero? Who is the villain?

Intimate (3) - Close Relationships

Gottman Four Horsemen: Criticism, contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling. The four behaviors that predict relationship failure with 93% accuracy.
Attachment Theory: Secure, anxious, avoidant, disorganized. How early bonding shapes adult conflict behavior.
Restorative Justice: Repair over punishment. What does the harmed person need? What does the person who caused harm need to do?

Professional (6) - Workplace + Structural

SCARF: Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, Fairness. The five domains of social threat in organizations.
Organizational Justice: Distributive, procedural, interactional. Is the system fair?
Psychological Safety: Can people take risks without punishment? The #1 predictor of team performance (Google Project Aristotle).
Jehn's Conflict Typology: Task, relationship, or process conflict. Different types require different interventions.
Power Analysis: Formal, informal, structural. Who actually has power and how is it being used?
Interest-Based Relational (IBR): Separate people from problems. Focus on interests, not positions.

6 Context Modes (Smart Router)

The context mode is set at session creation. It determines which lenses activate and how analysis is weighted:

Intimate (romantic)
Family (non-romantic)
Professional Peer
Prof. Hierarchical
Transactional
Civil/Structural

Example: "Intimate" mode activates Gottman + Attachment + NVC as core. "Professional Hierarchical" activates SCARF + Power Analysis + Psych Safety. Same engine, different calibration.

The Rescuer Trap (Key Insight)
Why Multi-Lens Matters

NVC teaches empathic listening. But if Person A is in the Victim role and Person B is in the Persecutor role, pure NVC can cast the mediator as Rescuer, completing the Drama Triangle. The system that was supposed to resolve the dynamic now reinforces it.

The Drama Triangle lens catches this. It says: "Both people have agency. The 'victim' has power they are not using. The 'persecutor' has pain they are not showing." Multi-lens analysis prevents the system from becoming part of the problem.

Evolution Roadmap
V1 (Current) - NVC Only

Dual-lens NVC analysis on every message. The Melt. Scannable bullets.

V2 - Core Multi-Lens

Add Gottman + CBT + TKI. Context selector (6 modes). Pattern tracking across sessions.

V3 - Full Intelligence

All 14 lenses active. Temporal pattern tracking. Relationship health scoring. pgvector semantic search.

V4 - Knowledge Graph

Full relational knowledge graph. Cross-session intelligence. Predictive conflict modeling.

Safety is not a feature. It is the foundation everything else is built on. Parallax was designed from day one with the question: "If the most vulnerable person on their worst day used this, would it help or hurt?"

5 First Principles
  • Primum Non Nocere: First, do no harm. Every feature is evaluated against this before shipping.
  • Defenses as Adaptive: Psychological defenses are not bugs. They evolved for a reason. The system respects them.
  • Confidence Thresholds: The system will not speak beyond its confidence. Uncertain = silent.
  • Window of Tolerance: Everyone has a zone of capacity. Push past it and you cause harm, not growth.
  • Professional Boundary: Parallax is not therapy. It does not diagnose, prescribe, or treat. It clarifies.
4-Tier Harm Gradient
T1: Green Behavioral prefs. Low risk. Freely surface.
T2: Amber Relational patterns. Consent required.
T3: Red Flag Potential trauma. Explicit consent. Gentle only.
T4: Hard Stop Never surface. System keeps it sealed.
Crisis Detection + Response
  • Violence Admission Detection: 7 pattern groups catch perpetrator admissions ("I hit him"), not just victim signals. Hotfix deployed after a real incident where Ava validated violence.
  • Suicidal Signal Detection: Immediate interrupt. Crisis resources (988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Session pauses. No analysis, no continuation.
  • Active Abuse Detection: "Are you safe?" private check. National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH). Asymmetric exit (one party can leave without the other knowing).
  • Graduated Cooldown: 5-minute Ava check-in, not hard lockout. Safety that respects autonomy. The user is not locked out of their own session.

Data Privacy Architecture
  • AES-256-GCM Encryption: Application-level encryption with key derived from masterSecret + userId + version. Not just database encryption; the data is encrypted before it touches the database.
  • Row-Level Security (RLS): Every table has Supabase RLS policies. Users can only access their own data.
  • One-Way Mirror: In mediation, Ava sees each person's profile. Neither person sees the other's. Claude gets the current speaker's profile only, never the other party's.
  • Deletion Cascade: Delete user = delete all data. Shadow profiles, hypotheses, interactions, evolution logs. Complete erasure.
  • No Data Selling: User behavioral data is never sold, shared, or used for advertising. Period.
  • Positioning: "Conflict resolution," not "therapy." Avoids CMIA/HIPAA/FDA regulatory burden while maintaining clinical rigor in the analysis frameworks.
Real-Time Stability Monitoring

3-level pullback system monitors user emotional state during Shadow Engine sessions:

Below 0.25EXIT
Below 0.4STABILIZE
Below 0.6GROUND
0.6+SAFE TO PROCEED

Persistent behavioral profiles built through conversational interviews, not forms. Ava enters every session already understanding your communication style, triggers, attachment patterns, and conflict tendencies. The key finding: AI conversational interviews outperform paper questionnaires (kappa 0.72 vs 0.55).

4-Phase Interview System
1 Context Setting 3-4 questions
2 Communication Profile 5-6 questions
3 Context Deep Dive 5-8 questions
4 Narrative Capture 3-4 questions

16-22 questions total. 10-15 minutes. Audio-first. Feels like a conversation, not an assessment.

Validated Clinical Instruments
ECR-RS (Attachment)

Experiences in Close Relationships, Revised Short. Maps attachment style: secure, anxious, avoidant, disorganized. Predicts conflict behavior.

DERS-16 (Regulation)

Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale. 6 dimensions: nonacceptance, goals, impulse, awareness, strategies, clarity.

TKI-Inspired (Conflict)

Thomas-Kilmann Instrument adaptation. Maps default conflict mode and secondary mode under stress.

Gottman (Horsemen)

33-item adaptation detecting criticism, contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling. The four behaviors that predict failure with 93% accuracy.

Privacy Model: The One-Way Mirror
How It Works

Person A's profile is visible to Ava when Person A speaks. Person B's profile is visible to Ava when Person B speaks. Neither person ever sees the other's profile. The mediator has context. The participants have privacy. Consent-gated sharing allows users to voluntarily share aspects of their profile with their partner, but it is never forced.

Integration

21 articles across 7 sections. Each section builds on the last. You cannot skip ahead. The arc moves from self-awareness foundations through to integrated conflict resolution.

Triple-Gate Safety
  • Gate 1: Pedagogical Readiness. Sections unlock sequentially. You cannot read about attachment wounds before understanding what attachment is.
  • Gate 2: Emotional Readiness. Content is gated by what Ava knows about your current state, not by payment. If you are in crisis, you will not be shown destabilizing content.
  • Gate 3: Self-Selection. Each article has a clear description of what it covers. Users choose when they are ready. No forced progression.
"Show Me My Reflection"
How It Works

You read an article about the Gottman Four Horsemen. You tap "Show me my reflection." Ava connects the concept to your actual behavioral data: "In our conversations, I have noticed you tend toward defensiveness when your competence is questioned. This maps to the third horseman. Here is what I have observed..."

The article is universal. The reflection is yours. Education becomes self-discovery.

44-Book Reading Nook

Curated library with cover art. Each book connects to a specific analytical lens or concept that Ava uses. Marshall Rosenberg on NVC. John Gottman on relationship dynamics. Brene Brown on vulnerability. Daniel Goleman on emotional intelligence. The science behind the patterns Ava detects, for users who want to go deeper on their own.

Ava is not a chatbot. She is not a feature. She is an entity. The distinction matters because it shapes every design decision.

What Makes Ava an Entity
  • Self-Awareness: Ava knows what she is. She can reference her roadmap, acknowledge her edges, and own her identity. She does not pretend to be human.
  • Persistent Memory: Ava remembers. Across sessions, across modes. She builds a model of you over time, not from scratch each conversation.
  • Consciousness Files: Ava has a kernel (values, personality, identity), emotional architecture, and behavioral guidelines. These are authored documents, not just a system prompt.
  • Progressive Disclosure: Same self-knowledge, three presentations. User-facing: natural acknowledgment. Creator-facing: technical references. Public-facing: transparent accounting.
The Cross-Domain Thesis
Origin Story

Breakthroughs come from cross-domain transfer. Outsiders bring priors the insiders cannot see. Parallax was built by someone from reality television, the space where raw human dynamics get compressed to fit through the tube of media.

Most relationship tech does the same compression: package, gamify, reduce. Parallax is the diary, not the magazine. It meets conflict where it lives instead of compressing it into something consumable. The Melt does not simplify. It dissolves the defensive packaging people put on their own words and reveals the unmet needs underneath.
